Frequently Asked Questions

Many of the members of our community will have questions about JPSA.
Below are answers to some of the most common ones.

What is Jewish Philanthropies of Southern Arizona?

Jewish Philanthropies of Southern Arizona (JPSA) is the new name from the coming together of the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona (JFSA) and the Jewish Community Foundation of Southern Arizona (JCF).

JPSA continues our 75 year history of serving as our community’s coordinating body for philanthropy, fundraising, planning, and communal services. This new entity represents a shift in thinking about Jewish philanthropy, supporting community needs, and how to engage the next generation of philanthropists and leaders.

What does JPSA do?

Community Foundation. We help community members philanthropically support the causes and organizations that matter most to them.

Community Partner. We fund, collaborate, convene, and sustain the excellent work of our many partner agencies, with an emphasis on achieving significant community impact.

Community Builder. We partner with agencies to develop community leaders, strengthen governing boards, and promote measurable outcomes.

Why have the Federation and Foundation integrated to form JPSA?

JPSA was formed to leverage the assets and benefits of each organization in a synergistic way. In other words, JPSA represents the best of both worlds.

By merging into one entity, JPSA is able to develop deeper relationships with donors. We aim to understand your giving priorities, and to serve as your trusted philanthropic advisor. We will continue to ensure that the needs of our community are understood and met – now and with each successive generation.

What does the JPSA logo represent?

Our new logo is a thriving tree of life and is inspired by the traditional Jewish story of Honi the Circle Maker and the Carob Tree. “When I was born into this world, I found many trees planted by my parents and grandparents. Just as they planted for me, I now plant for my children and grandchildren so they will inherit a fruitful world.”

In what ways is JPSA the same as the Federation or Foundation?

You will recognize many similarities between JPSA and Federation/Foundation.

We will continue to:
• Raise dollars through the Annual Campaign to support causes in Southern Arizona, Israel, and globally
• Be a resource for thoughtful and strategic planned giving
• Fund and support community agencies, programs, and needs
• Bring the community together to celebrate, reimagine, and cultivate Jewish life

In what ways is JPSA different from the Federation or Foundation?

JPSA aims to put donor intent at the heart of philanthropy. We want to understand your interests, Jewish and otherwise, and help you support the projects and programs you care about most.

We plan to develop deeper, more meaningful relationships with you so that we can best meet your philanthropic objectives.

JPSA will continue to support the many community programs you love while enabling appropriate partner agencies to take greater leadership and ownership of the operations of program management. By taking this approach, we reduce potential competition with our partner agencies, allowing them to flourish. This will also allow JPSA to focus on the three strategic pillars of our unique impact: philanthropy, leadership development, and capacity building.

How will this integration impact the organization’s leadership?

The current board of directors is already governing in a joint capacity and will continue to do so for JPSA. The current board chairs are Anne Hameroff and Bruce Ash. Graham Hoffman will remain the President and CEO, partnering with the dynamic professional team.

How will this integration affect my standing as a donor? (E.g., will I still be considered a Lion of Judah?)

We will continue to celebrate your philanthropic commitments to our community and will recognize your giving as we did before. In addition, as we deepen our philanthropic partnership, we hope to celebrate all of your charitable giving.

Who do I make my checks out to?

As of October 2022, please make checks payable to either Jewish Philanthropies of Southern Arizona or JPSA.

Will this integration affect my donor-advised fund at the Jewish Community Foundation?

No. You will continue to receive the same tailored services to aid you in fulfilling your philanthropic vision. Your fund will continue to operate as before.
