The Center for Jewish Resilience (CJR), a program of Jewish Philanthropies of Southern Arizona, is the central address for Jewish community security, public affairs, and antisemitism education in Southern Arizona.
CJR is dedicated to ensuring the safety, security, wellbeing, and longevity of our Jewish community. This is core and foundational to our mission. In a post 10/7 world, we have come to understand the critical need to sharpen our focus and develop and strengthen local efforts in public affairs, civic engagement, security, and pushing back against contemporary antisemitism.
We are Arizona's only on-the-ground resource fielding, investigating and responding to local incidents of antisemitism. We provide resources, advocacy and education to combat and prevent anti-Jewish hate and bigotry.
CJR convenes the JCRPAC, the Jewish Community Relations and Public Affairs Council.
What We Do
CJR was created to sharpen three areas of this work.
Contemporary Antisemitism Education and Response
There is a dearth of understanding of what modern anti-Jewish hate looks like – how to recognize it and how to respond to it. Through advocacy, education, incident reporting, maintaining a crisis management hotline, thought leadership and more, CJR is the primary voice and representative of the Jewish community in the region on matters related to antisemitism.
Public Affairs, Civic Engagement, Strategic Relationship Building, and Tikkun Olam
CJR community relations work manifests in non-partisan advocacy for issues of Jewish community concern, including supporting Israel's right to exist as the Jewish homeland, the country of residence for more than half of world Jewry, and a key aspect of Jewish identity for most diaspora Jews. Our efforts include short-term crisis management and long-term building and management of meaningful relationships, bridges and partnerships with government officials, legislators, educators, interfaith partners, NGO leaders, media contacts, and partners in the business community. Along with building authentic relationships, it is CJR's objective to model and raise Jewish values through its work.
Community Security
The security needs of our community are changing and evolving. CJR leads strategic security planning efforts, centering the needs of our Jewish institutions and partner organizations, to assess and plan for the next decade. In addition to short- and long-term plans for hardening Jewish buildings, CJR explores partnerships within the tech industry to address online hate our community is facing, provides security training opportunities, threat assessments for grant applications, and facilitates community security forums to enhance our awareness and education, and continues to build important relationships with local law enforcement.
